Introduction

Hydration products today are not only functional objects but also lifestyle accessories that influence user behaviour and emotional engagement. Infusion bottles encourage healthier drinking habits by allowing users to add fruits, herbs, or flavours into water. However, most existing bottle caps focus mainly on utility and lack playful interaction.

This project explores how interactive mechanisms and playful experiences can transform a routine activity like drinking water into an engaging ritual. The aim was to design an infusion bottle cap that creates curiosity, satisfaction, and delight through movement, interaction, and visual storytelling.

The project takes inspiration from toy-like interactions, animated transformations, and iconic rotational mechanisms found in pop culture products. By combining push and rotational actions, the design creates a cap experience that feels dynamic and memorable.

Design Brief

Design a playful infusion bottle cap for a modern lifestyle.

The cap should:

  • Encourage user interaction
  • Create an enjoyable hydration experience
  • Include a unique mechanism
  • Be visually attractive and playful
  • Function effectively for infusion
  • Suit modern lifestyle products

Research and exploration

Different infusion bottle caps available in the market were studied to understand:

  • Existing mechanisms
  • User interaction patterns
  • Form language
  • Ease of use
  • Emotional engagement

The products mainly followed:

  1. Twist-open systems
  2. Push-button mechanisms
  3. Pull-and-lock systems
  4. Static infusion chambers

Although functional, many products lacked a memorable or playful interaction experience.

CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT

Combining Push + Rotation

The design direction evolved by combining:

  • Rotational activation
  • Push-based release

This combination created:

  • Sequential interaction
  • Anticipation before action
  • A playful mechanical ritual

The interaction became:

  1. Rotate
  2. Align
  3. Push
  4. Infuse

This sequence felt more engaging than a standard bottle cap.

Concept Inspiration — Omnitrix

During ideation, inspiration was drawn from the iconic transformation device from the animated universe of Ben 10 - the Omnitrix.

Key qualities that inspired the design:

  • Circular rotational dial
  • Push-to-activate interaction
  • Mechanical transformation feel
  • Futuristic playful appearance
  • Strong emotional nostalgia

The goal was not to replicate the object directly, but to capture:

  • The excitement of activation
  • The tactile interaction
  • The feeling of transformation
