Exploration

We began by creating mood boards to explore visual references and gather design inspiration.

Silver forks with twisted handles on a grey surface
Wooden cutlery with branch-shaped handles
Gold-toned spoons with leaf-shaped handles
Serving cutlery with looped wire handles
Slim black cutlery with flat handles
Curved matte silver cutlery on a black background
Gold and silver swan-shaped cutlery holders
Colourful folding travel cutlery
Teal moulded spoon, fork and knife
Sculptural silver cutlery with organic handles

Initial Explorations & Ideation

the exploration theme based was of forest-inspired

Pencil sketches of organic spoons and forks
Pencil sketches of cutlery handle profiles

Mockups & Prototyping Process

From Exploration to Prototype

Sketched concepts, cut materials, and performed angle grinding for mold preparation.

Two people marking and working on sheet material while seated
Marking a cutlery outline on a sheet
Cutting sheet metal on a bench shear
Working a piece in a bench vice in the workshop
Operating the shearing machine
Working at the bench vice in the workshop
Angle grinding a wooden mold held in a vice
Angle grinding a wooden mold, second angle
Shaping a mold at the grinder
Carving a spoon-shaped hollow into a wooden mold

Attempts which didn’t work out

Early aluminium spoon and fork pieces laid out on a table
A formed aluminium fork-shaped piece
Flat aluminium strips and a rough blade piece
A formed aluminium spoon bowl and a flat blade
A fork with a wooden handle held in a hand
ergonomically inconvenient handle
Aluminium spoon bowls and strips on a table

Our final attempt

Fixing a fork head to a handle with a rivet
Carving a wooden handle on a block
The finished spoon, knife and fork with wooden handles
riveting
Grinding a fork head against a wheel
Hammering a rivet on an anvil
Aligning a fork head on a block
Drilling a rivet hole in a handle
Shaping a handle held in a yellow vice

Packaging

The final prototype was fabricated using aluminium sheet metal and assembled through riveting, demonstrating practical sheet metal forming and joining techniques.
